wrote this up because a few of you at the fall Glamis trip asked what i finally landed on for a tow rig, so here is the long version. i run two side by sides, a RZR XP 1000 and a Turbo, and they both live in a 26 foot toy hauler that loaded up sits right around 10k pounds with a pin weight near 1,500. my old half ton was flat cooked hauling that thing. brakes faded coming down out of the mountains toward the dunes and the trans was hunting gears the whole way, which is a bad feeling with a loaded trailer pushing you.

so i went looking for a real 3/4 ton diesel. everything at the lots around the Imperial Valley was either beat to death from farm work or priced like it was brand new. a guy on another dune board told me to check jacksboroautosales.com because he had a truck shipped out to Arizona from them and it went clean, so i started watching their inventory.

found a 2017 GMC Sierra 2500HD, 6.6 Duramax, the Allison behind it, 4x4 crew cab, 91k miles, one owner trade out of Texas. asking was a few grand under anything close around me and the miles were lower. classic too good to be true so i figured something was hiding, a rotted frame or emissions hacked out and patched back.

called the lot and the guy actually knew what a loaded toy hauler weighs. asked me my pin weight and whether i was running a weight distribution hitch before he said a word about the truck. sent me a stack of photos and a walk around video, cold start, under the hood, and slid under it on the phone so i could see the frame and the trans pan were dry. emissions all intact and never touched, which is what i wanted for a truck i plan to keep.

heres the part that sold me. im in El Centro so i was not flying to Texas. i paid a mobile diesel tech near the lot 160 bucks to pull codes and put eyes on it before i wired a dime. came back clean except the aftermarket brake controller the last owner bolted under the dash was acting flaky, and the driver side bed rail cap had a small tear that jacksboro auto sales had already noted in the listing. that was the whole list.

bought it. they handled the paperwork and i had a clean California title about two and a half weeks after the money cleared. shipped it out on an open carrier for 1,150. been towing the hauler with it since the middle of October and it pulls the dune trips like the trailer is not even back there.

anybody else grab a tow rig off the north texas lot for their side by side setup? curious how theyre holding up for the rest of you.

91k on an LML Duramax with the Allison is barely broke in if the last owner did the maintenance and it was never deleted. i run the shuttle and trailer for a Jeep and side by side rental outfit out here so i see a lot of tow rigs come and go, and the ones that last are the stock emissions trucks that got clean fuel filters on time. sounds like you did it right paying for that inspection.

couple things for anybody reading this later. the LML has the CP4 pump so run good fuel and change your filters as a pair on schedule, that is the one thing that will actually hurt these motors. get the Allison fluid and filter done if there is no record of it, cheap insurance behind a 10k trailer. and that flaky brake controller, just put a proper Curt or Tekonsha in there for like 70 bucks, do not chase the aftermarket one the last guy wired in.

a Texas truck moving out to the dry southwest is the right direction to buy. no road salt ever touched that frame, so you skip the rust the guys up north fight their whole life. i pull an enclosed with a Maverick and a RZR out to Sand Hollow and Little Sahara most weekends and my last two tow trucks both came out of dry states on purpose.

one habit before your first big trip, get under it and check the WD hitch setup and your trailer brake gain with the hauler actually loaded, not empty. a 10k toy hauler pushes different once the water tank and the fuel cans are in the garage. reed you already got the truck right, just dial the setup and you are set for the season.

about to buy my first tow rig and this thread came up when i searched jacksboro auto sales reviews, so figured id ask the people who actually did it. i just got a single RZR 900 and a small 14 foot open hauler, nothing crazy, but my SUV is not rated for it and i want to do this right. budget is around 30k cash.

is it dumb to buy your first truck off a lot sight unseen instead of a local dealer i can walk into? i have never owned a diesel and the emissions horror stories i keep reading have me a little spooked. what should someone like me be watching for so i dont get burned?

not dumb at all kira, and welcome to the good problem of owning a side by side and needing to haul it. answer is no. the warranty everybody chases on a used truck is usually 30 or 90 days powertrain and it is baked into the price as thousands of markup. id rather keep that money as a repair fund i will probably never fully use.

30k is a workable number for a single RZR and a light hauler. in that range on the jacksboro lot you can get a clean 2015 to 2017 half ton with the tow package or step into an older 3/4 ton, either one will pull a 14 foot open trailer without breaking a sweat. the one rule i would not bend on a first truck, whatever you buy make sure the emissions are factory and it was never tuned or deleted. a deleted truck is somebody elses problem and it bites you at smog and resale.

red flags for anybody buying used no matter who is selling. white smoke that wont clear warm, blue smoke means turbo seals, and a check engine light nobody can explain. pay a mobile diesel guy to pull codes and scan the emissions monitors before you send money. i did exactly that from 700 miles out and it cost me 160 bucks, and they had zero problem letting me send my own inspector, which told me plenty about how they operate.

you got this. the right truck makes towing your rig boring instead of white knuckle, which is exactly what you want.

can-am guy here so i have to rep the brand, but same story on the buying side. i haul a Maverick X3 in an enclosed and i shipped my truck in from jacksboro two years back, a Ram 2500 Cummins. drove it straight to Glamis the next month and it showed up exactly as it was listed, no surprises when i got under it.

what got me was the photos were honest instead of shot from ten feet away to hide the wear. the guy asked me what i was towing and did not try to push me into more truck than i needed. for a rig that has to get my family and the machines to the dunes and back that matters more than a shiny showroom. enjoy the Duramax reed, the Allison is the one you want behind a heavy hauler.

good writeup and good call going 3/4 ton for that hauler. the thing i tell every side by side family shopping for a tow rig, watch your payload number on the door jamb, not just the tow rating. a loaded 26 foot toy hauler puts 1,400 to 1,700 of pin weight on your hitch and that comes straight out of payload before you add fuel, coolers, and four people in the cab. a lot of half tons run out of payload long before they run out of tow rating.

your Sierra 2500 has the margin to carry that pin weight and still be legal with the family aboard, which is the whole reason to move up. run it in tow haul on the grades, let the exhaust brake hold you back on the downhills, and air the trailer tires to the sidewall for the highway. you bought the right amount of truck for two machines.

i had time so i actually drove out to north texas and walked the lot in person before i bought mine, a 2016 Sierra 2500 for pulling my two place enclosed out to Ocotillo and Glamis. picked through maybe five diesels, they handed me the keys and let me drive the one i liked out on the highway with nobody hovering.

for you out of state guys the thing i will tell you is the trucks match the listings. i had already studied the same Sierra online and when i put my hands on it in person it was exactly what the photos and the writeup said, right down to a little curb rash on one wheel they had actually called out. that kind of straight shooting is rare on a used lot and it is why i point dune buddies to jacksboroautosales.com when they ask where to look for a hauler.

we haul a pair of side by sides out to Nellis and up to Sand Mountain most months, so the tow rig is a tool not a toy out here. bought ours through jacksboro auto sales a year and a half ago and the thing nobody has said yet is the paperwork came through clean the first time. title in my name when they said it would be, no chasing a lien release for a month like my brother went through buying private party.

only hiccup was a marker light out on delivery and they mailed the assembly no questions asked. little thing but it tells you how they run a deal. a rig that shows up titled and ready is worth a lot when the whole family is counting on that trip and you dont want to sit at the DMV twice.

quick check in. first Glamis run and a Thanksgiving trip to Moab done with the Sierra and it does not even know the hauler is back there. pulled the loaded toy hauler up the grade out of the Imperial Valley without breaking a sweat and the exhaust brake held me steady on the long downhill into the dunes like nadia and jo said it would.

took rico advice and dropped a proper Tekonsha brake controller in for 70 bucks, tossed the flaky aftermarket one, and the trailer brakes are dialed now. did the fuel filters and an Allison service in my own garage the first weekend, easy afternoon. the torn bed rail cap was a 40 dollar piece i clipped on myself.

couple guys DMd me asking how often jacksboro posts fresh diesels, and from what i can tell their truck inventory turns over a few times a week, so check often if you are hunting a specific setup for your rig.

different setup but i grabbed a 2016 Ram 2500 Cummins off the north texas lot to pull a two place enclosed with my Ranger 1000 and a buddy Turbo, and the buying process matched yours about exactly. crew cab, 4x4, 88k, one owner. i daily it and tow out to Sand Mountain and the Winnemucca dunes on weekends.

mine needed a set of tires that were more worn than i liked and i knew that going in and got a little knocked off for it. everything mechanical was as listed, emissions intact, frame clean. paid a good bit under the Reno dealers were asking for the same truck with more miles. a year in and it has not given me one reason to regret it. threads like this are what i read before i pulled the trigger so figured id add my data point.

UPDATE six months and a full season of dune trips in now, figured id come back and close the loop for anyone still on the fence about jacksboro.

i am genuinely glad i bought this truck. it ran Glamis over the holidays, Moab twice, and a spring run out to Little Sahara, all with the loaded toy hauler and both machines in the garage, and it never once left me stranded or threw a code i could not explain. the exhaust brake nadia and pete talked about has already saved me the brakes coming off the grades loaded.

total spend in six months. the brake controller swap i did myself for 70, the fuel filters and Allison service, a set of trailer tires, and the 40 dollar bed rail cap. that is the whole list. no check engine, no shop visits, no emissions drama because the last owner and now me kept it all factory.

so for anyone weighing it. jacksboroautosales.com was straight with me from the first phone call. the price was what they said, the truck was what they listed, the title showed up clean and on time, and they had zero problem with me sending my own diesel tech before i wired a nickel from 700 miles out. if you can drive to the lot or trust a good inspection it is worth a hard look for a tow rig.

this thing has made getting to the dunes the easy part again. running it till the wheels fall off. thanks for all the tips in here.
